Jaxon knew he would have to dig deeper yet into his built. Never before had he doubted his programming, but that simply had to do with the fact that never before did he have to doubt it. Furthermore, over the past years he had removed certain subroutines and protocols from his bionic side. He had turned himself into a human with bionic enhancements he had liked to think. That he still was as much an android that required basic order to be sent on a mission, it threw his entire self-image overboard completely.

The prefrontal cortex, while still the normal, human part of a brain, had been enhanced and apparently the enhancement still worked like a charm. The downloaded protocol had completely locked him out of his own decision making progress for well over an hour. And even now, he would have soldiered on had it not been for Vision.

They would have to keep him offline. For however long until someone was willing to take the risk of taking him back online. Jaxon did not want to know how long he would be strapped to this table. He closed his eyes, not worried about his own dignity right now. Right at this point, he had jeopardised everyone’s trust as it was. To the most of them, he was little more than the traitor … the faulty android right about now.

To most of them … He heard Elise’s voice, her words slurred. Something about Sherlock Holmes? Was his hearing shot as well? Jaxon blamed what he heard on his current state. Elise did sound drunk, but that was utterly impossible.

Then he felt the touch that was becoming familiar by now again. Elise was back at his side, and strange as it was, that helped him breathe easier. The was alive. Breathing. Walking. Talking. Relief washed through him, bringing him the opportunity to breathe. Jaxon closed his eyes, balling up the fist he could move and yanking the hand against the restraints holding him. It hurt. All of this just hurt. On so many damned levels. But right now the worst was not being able to touch her.

Yet it was not just physical pain. Like the restraint cutting into his wrist. It was more. Something else that puzzling him as it felt normal even though he had no scale to measure it on. The images existed in his head, like from a movie. How he had pushed the needle into Caitlin’s neck, lifted her unconscious body into his arms and had taken off. The idea itself … it hurt. He pressed his eyes further shut. It was like a sequence but the pictures were incoherent. Any kind of emotion was lacking from it. The worst was the memory of such a clear and defined goal. He had wanted to deliver her to the Services.

Everything now in play, it had been his doing. Including what could very well have been a fatal injury to Elise.

Moisture pushed into the corners of his eyes and Jaxon swallowed, forcing them back. He had no right to cry about this. He was not the victim here. If anything, he was the perpetrator. Jaxon tried to familiarise himself with the idea of spending the unforeseeable future either strapped down to this table barely able to survive on his own with his bionics down, or in a cell.

Her name was a whisper on his lips and he wondered whether she would even care to return to his side once his fate had been decided. If Gabriel decided that he no longer had a place here, then there was no place beside him for her to return to. Jaxon knew better than to humour the idea to be able to really protect her out there. She was far better off underneath the umbrella of so many mutants holed up in one place.

Jon’s eyes kept darting to the man on the table and the girl next to him. It was a strange scene to behold given how the evening had gone. He tried to imagine how he would have reacted had this occurred at the school all those years back. In his role as a teacher then, he probably would have taken a path a lot closer to Gabriel’s.

How things changed, he mused. Only weeks ago, he had not just seen rock bottom, he had been there. Alcohol constantly present in his blood stream, he had done what was possible to black out what his life had become; what he had become. And now? Beth’s return had everything and all that was left of that version of himself he had become was a track record he had to make up for along with the shaking of his hands that would at times still occur. It appeared his body had gotten quite used to the constant intake of alcohol.

But he had not touched a drop ever since Wanda had stepped into his workshop and had brought him here.

And now, now he looked at this … well, he felt inclined to call Jaxon a kid. Which was ridiculous, given he was north of thirty. And yet, he seemed so young, so full of potential and there were so many things left for him to do. With him was Elise – a woman he would easily refer to as a girl. He wondered where his own younger years had slipped off to. Stepping out of the haze of the past five years, he suddenly felt old. So much older than the years that had passed.

There was more between Jaxon and Elise than just friendship. Even a blind man would see that, he was sure. Somehow, he felt reminded of himself and Beth over ten years ago. So it was easy for him to grasp why he cared, why he wanted to help; needed to help.

“I have something”, he announced and Vision nodded. “Uploading it to your system now, Jaxon.” Jon tapped the screen initiating the upload. Jaxon’s legs and one arm began twitching as his bionics were fired up to life in their basic functionality.
“No worries, frequency scrambler is in effect. He cannot go online.” He threw another glance at Vision who once more nodded in the affirmative. “And here we go.”

That was the moment, every muscle in Jaxon’s body went taut. He opened his mouth, and from his lips erupted a gut-wrenching scream.

“Those bastards know how to code some serious tech”, Jon said his tone somewhat apologising as he turned back to his screen and tapped the controls, forcing the program he and Vision had written in tandem to push forward, push deeper.

She had stepped into the background, putting herself closer to Kira, her eyes fast on the wobbling form of the human girl in their midst. It was easy to perceive the concern about Elise as she attempted to hover. More than once she tried to stand to her normal height and composure, only for it to stutter, for her figure to waver in response to the sudden flood of endorphins that Kira’s healing allotted for. There was irritation along the borders of her thoughts, not being able to pull herself together and give what she felt needed to be turned over. There was… Beth stepped closer to her, pushed her curiosity further into the younger woman’s head and it lit up with familiarity.

Fear and regret swept across Jaxon’s mindspace, but it was understandable that he felt those things and she was able to push those aside in favor for Elise’s head. She watched the girl move herself towards the head of the table, tried to make sense of the screen Jon was looking at and it swam out of her focus, inciting her to set her head back down. Frustration again.

She looked to Jon when he indicated that he was going to upload whatever he and Vision had been cobbling together between them. It wouldn’t have helped her to slip into his thoughts when he was in his present state of mind. She was a telepath, nothing even like a technopath.

Plucking further at Elise’s thoughts, she brushed up against something almost near solid in the deeper portions of her mind where people attempted to bury their secrets and the girl lifted her head slightly from the table. When she attempted to nudge further, a scream shook her loose of the confines she sought to dip into and her focus shifted.

“There’s a process for disabling the interpretation of pain.” Elise immediately spit out as she rounded the side of the table and literally climbed onto it.

Beth moved without prompting and set her hand against Jaxon’s forehead, then felt another hand slip around her other wrist. Gabriel’s presence beside her took second seat as she disabled Jaxon’s pain receptors.

“Your emotions are clouding your judgement, Gabriel.” She told the other man as his grip sought to tighten. [“Don’t make me put you on the other side of the room.”] and the grip went lax.

As Jaxon’s body fought to settle, Elise unfolded herself against his left side and Beth snapped the binding holding his human arm still beside him in order to let let it feel and potentially curl around the figure tucking herself against him. There was a therapeutic component to touch.

“I think I’m going to…go to the kitchen.” Kira somewhat informed the room before turning towards the sliding doors and vacating the immediate area.

“Perhaps you should check on your wife.” She spoke and nudged at Gabe’s thoughts, turning them about and he huffed in reply. There was an urge to retort on the tip of his tongue and she was surprised when he bit it back and left the room without further comment or argument.

It felt like a hand had gripped his head, fingers clenched and then had started yanking. Pain shot down along the length of his spine and it set every cell on fire. Jaxon felt the sensation of the serpent, something slithering past him, through him, just out of the grip of whatever, whoever wanted to catch it. And it its wake it left a trail of fire.

Jaxon was certain somehow someone was trying to pull his limbs out of their sockets. Dismember him and just be done with it, be done with him. Images flashed before his inner eye. The ceiling of a lab. Faces half obscured behind white masks. Bright lights, blinking consoles. And the pain. So very similar. It sparked his reflex of flight and once more Jaxon threw what he had against his restraints. But his limbs did not really function. He knew it. He thought he was moving his legs but the bionic components barely reacted.

Tears of frustration pushed out of the corners of his eyes. How had he gotten here? To this place where the people who had given him a home and offered him their friendship had him strapped down to the table so much like the people who had turned him into what he now was? So he did not feel the soft touch of a woman’s hand against his forehead at first. Only when the flames became no more than an image, rather than a sensation, could he sense it.

Jaxon gasped, slowly relaxing whatever body part he had control over bit by bit. Shaky breaths went in and out and for a moment he worried that maybe he was truly back at the lab what with someone suddenly climbing on top of him. Was it a figment of imagination or actual memory that sometimes work on his bionic parts had been done with tools in hand sitting astride his chest or legs? He blinked furiously, willing his eyes to actually see rather than his mind to inject.

He tried to see, tried to recognise who it was that … Elise it eventually came to him. Jaxon swallowed against an aching throat. He tried to breath, tried to hear and see his surroundings. But it remained a struggle. The war continued raging in his mind as the agency defended its position while the mutants around him tried to drive it out. All he could pick up on really was Elise’s presence now unfolding against his side.

And then his wrist could move…

It moved almost on its own, curling around the slender form that pushed herself against his. Jaxon wanted to turn his head, push his cheek against the top of her head and just hold her. But the restraints keeping his head locked in place were just in all the right spots to prevent that kind of movement. The table was not just for strapping down prisoners. It was a way to secure patients who suffered seizures and such. It was a matter of precaution and safe keeping of the patient more than anything else.

So Jaxon accepted it, just pushed his arm further around Elise and thus pulled her closer. Her warmth pushed against him let him breathe a little easier. It dulled the image of the flames still posing as a backdrop of his mind while something somehow inside his mind kept chasing the agency’s footprints. Jaxon closed his eyes. Everything was in shambles. Torn down around him, and now no more than a pile of debris.

The entire life he had built for himself during the past years. Had today simply taken that? Had the agency taken more yet from him when he had been so sure that there was nothing left anyone could steal from him? However, what with building something for himself, Jaxon realised, he once more had things to lose. And today had shown him just how quickly and how easily that could happen.

All he wanted was to roll himself off of that table, take Elise’s smaller form with him, and hide the both of them away in some dark corner. Lock the doors behind them and then shut off the light, just to lay there and stare into her eyes, assure himself that she was alive. And yet, what if after today nothing would be how it was? What if he no longer had a place within this community? What if he and Elise would thus be over before it all really began?

He ignore the little voice insisting that it had begun, and instead just hung himself amongst all the what-if’s. Maybe that was the reason why the urge to hide was so strong.

“This might take all night … or longer”, Jon announced from somewhere far away.
“We have to be thorough”, Vision amended, as he moved to his own console.
Jon looked at his wife. “Can you put him under?” His voice was soft, apologetic almost. They all had just witnessed that the process was likely going to be unpleasant for Jaxon.

Jaxon shook his head as much as was possible. “No”, he choked out, his hand finding Elise’s and his fingers interlocked with hers. “I am better here.” He gulped, breathed deeply as if to steel himself. “Do not put me back in the dark”, he whispered, catching a flash of lavender just above him.
