General Questions
I have chosen an Species from the templates (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/showthread.php?t=3894) and written my character biography but who do I PM?
Once you've chosen one, PM a warlord. You can find their names at the top of the ADA forum as moderators.
Do all Species have an initial power? i.e. shimmer/blinking?
Yes, everyone may shimmer/blink (but only to enter and exit a thread - you cannot use it to escape an attack unless it is one of your specifically chosen powers.)
Also, of the eight species available, each has two base powers which you will receive upon reaching level one and level two. After that you can choose one of the four breeds and the powers for each level varies. With each promotion, you also gain a Talisman.
Am I allowed to dodge/evade attacks?
Yes but be realistic, no one could dodge every attack. If someone sends a lightning bolt at you from point blank range it will be highly unlikely you could dodge whereas a rock thrown from 50m away is much more likely to be dodged. It's a balance and you have to use your judgement, if you dodge everything then:
a) you will probably find it hard to get into fights again as people will not fight you, its meant to be a fun game and constant evasion may amuse you but it certainly wont your opponents.
b) you may get a warning from Warlord/Trainers.
Some fight RPGs promote their members to Level 1 immediately after he/she hands in a biography, I don't suppose it works like this here right?
Yes it does. Every trainee must hand in a *suitable* bio and they will then be promoted to level 1.
If you are a Trainee, do you have your level 1 powers in training threads?
In training threads, it's up to the trainer whether to let you use your next level powers. In normal tournaments and in the WWD (excluding the Initiation training found there), no. If you wish to make up a battle thread between you and someone else, you can add whatever rules you wish, within reason.
Also how do you know about promotions? In Meetings? Are people promoted at the same time (same meeting) or by separate?
Promotions are announced at the close of each weekly meeting, if and when there are any. Promotions are few and far between though. People are promoted up a level or to a new job position only when the Warlords feel that a person is ready.
When I get promoted and I post my power requests in the Dark Apothecary, do I have to wait until a Dark Apothecarian gives it to me or can I just start using it?
You have to wait until your post replied to by a Dark Apothecarian, and also for a Warlord to state that the member roster (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/showthread.php?t=3794) has been updated. Then you're good to go.
Is Activities forum important for promotions?
ALL participation is important for promotions. You shouldn't aim just for the minimum requirements, try to expand your horizons and show everyone what the ADA is about.
What jobs do you offer and how do you apply for them?
Check out this thread (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/showthread.php?t=3789). It's a listing of all available jobs in ADA and WWD, who's got which, which ones are open and how to apply for them.
Does ADA have a money or points system?
No.
If you add your powers by going to edit profile (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/profile.php?do=editprofile), can you see them here?
You see them in the profile when you look someone up. Your powers will also be listed in the member roster, and your character's individual biography page. You can submit a character biography for the ADA by going to the submission page (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/biography.php?do=setup&rpg=4), and you can view other peoples' biographies here (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/rpg.php?do=view&what=chars&id=4).
My character is pregnant, can the baby have special powers like Piper's did?
No, you can only have your own powers. Also remember that made up characters (NPCs) cannot be healed. On a side note if you choose to play a pregnant character, which you may at any time, be prepared for other Demons coming after you because they will without a doubt ;)
Can I have pets in ADA, e.g. in Venom?
Yes. Pets cannot have powers or abilities though and they are fair game for anyone else who may feel "evil urges". Pets may not be mythological creatures, hybrid creatures, or creatures that are bigger than ones you would find in the real world - unless you have a power that allows you to. You should not take a pet into the likes of Venom unless you can protect it or do not mind it becoming an ex-pet.
What exactly is considered an instant kill?
Well, for example if I just blow you up, or smash a knife into your heart, or break your neck, or cut your throat or something that kills with the first post, then it's not allowed. Though you could for example, stab his/her chests with a knife, in the next post, stab his stomach, then cut his wrists and finally kill him off... It just can't be in one attack.
I'm a level two and I want to restart as a trainee, with new Archetype and new character, can that be done?
No, you have to be a level three to be allowed to restart. You can restart as many times as you want, as long as you reach level three, minimum, each time. This rule is in effect, not to be a pain, but so that people don't constantly restart.
Are we allowed to use our powers that we are training for in ADA? I know you can't in WWD, but if someone is level 2, can they use their level 3 power as long as it's within ADA only?
In fights where it is specifically stated (like arena, or if allowed in a training thread) you may use next level powers. It does not apply to all areas of ADA, for example in Hellfire Cafe (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/forumdisplay.php?f=143) you'd be using your current level powers only.
Does this apply to all your fights in the Arena (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/forumdisplay.php?f=187) or do you have to specify it in the thread?
The rules for the fight have to contain it (stated in the first post) and your opponent has to agree to it. So yeah one way or another it has to be specified. Default to fight at is always your current level in ADA.
I have a question about people who play more than two characters. I was under the impression that you're only allowed one character, so... are they just making clones of their original character to play with?
Yes, they use clones. Alternatively they are playing with an extra character in a Hellfire Cafe or Thorned Throne thread, but this would be classed as a 'NPC' non playable character, meaning that the character has no powers whatsoever.
If you're in a fight to the death... does your character actually die? And you have to start all over from ground zero with a new character? Or do they just die in the said fight?
You just die in said fight.
There's nothing in the rules against having a telepathic connection with like, a person in storylines, right? So long as it's not another member of ADA/FGB and it doesn't affect fights, I'd assume.
As long as it's used in TTTs, VQs or Playgrounds, and not in fights, I don't see a problem with it. In fights you must have the actual Telepathy/Sensing power.
Besides the power tables, are there guides for certain Species and Complementary Powers?
Not at present. However you can just PM a Warlord, a member who has those powers, your Trainer or you Big Brother/Sister and they will see if they can help you out. There will be someone who can help you out. You will also find role playing/fighting guide in the Sinner's Sanctuary (http://www.midnight-shadows.org/forumdisplay.php?f=102) forum, so have a good look around.
When you post an attack that lasts for (blank) number of posts, whose posts are they. Say Person A is level 10 (I know they don't go that high) and transforms into an animal, does that last for 10 of Person A's posts, of 10 of the thread posts.
10 of person A's posts. However if person A blinds person B for 5 posts, those would be 5 of person B's posts.

General Power Questions
When I enter and leave places like Venom can I use some kind of special entrance e.g. :: With a boom of thunder and a flash of lightning ::.
It has been stated that this is okay as long as it does not get too out of hand. Your entrance and exit cannot affect anyone else and in the WWD you should stick to a simple shimmer/blink. Also if someone comes up with a really good idea then please don't just copy it, which is unfair to the original person. Also bear in mind a flashy entrance will announce your presence to everyone which may be good or bad; a good fighting veteran is hardly likely to announce their arrival to the entire arena. Flaming in will be reserved only for the Warlords.
Why can't I shimmer/blink to escape attacks i.e. dodge?
Some Species have a movement power as part of their levels and only this will allow attack evasion, too many people were dodging attacks ALL THE TIME using shimmering/blinking so the rule was imposed (and this applies to FGB too).
If you are blinded can you sense an opponents presence?
No, though some species may be able to do this partially ('Shapeshifters' for example.)
What does "similar size" object mean as used in the powers descriptions? Is that like surrounding an enemies hand with fire if they're, let's say, trying to TK me or something?
Fire means you can create a fireball, or say something the same size, of course it must be hand held. So for example I could create a fire knife, but it would be a fireball in the shape of a knife, not an actual knife. Also, check the "level ranges/effects" on the Species page for further information.
Are we allowed to channel our powers through weapons? For example, shooting a fireball trough a staff.
No. Only specific Gifts allow you to do so. Also they can't be used in the 'No Weapon' threads.
Can we change the color of our powers at will? Example, creating blue fire, or red, orange, black, white??
Yeah you can change the color, as long as that's all you change.
Can I conjure, create, change objects into Adamantium metal?
Adamantium is fictional metal based on Marvel-verse. So no.
Can I channel powers into other powers. For example, could I hold a fireball, and channel my ice talisman powers into it so the fireball would burn and the freeze upon contact. Or fire out a stream of fire and channel shadow energy into it to blind an opponent with a fire stream?
Sort of. You could, for example, coat a fireball with an ice ball, or an ice ball with fire. But just be aware of how it affects the combo with in. A move like that example wouldn't be effective for long because the heat would melt the ice eventually you know. Be creative, but keep physics in mind.
I'm not sure if this is right but most solid/elemental projectiles (fire/lightning/ice/dark/water/shadow...etc) can be channeled through the ground. Do we necessarily need to fire a beam into the earth or press a palm to the earth to channel them through the ground?
Yep you would. Basically when you channel powers through the ground they still come from you, and travel to their target. So, if you were channeling ice, you'd place your hand on the ground, you'd see a line of ice come from you to the target, and then the effect would happen.
So like beams, can these 'ground-traveling projectiles' only travel in straight lines or can I manipulate them so that they can weave around objects and then hit their target?
You can manipulate the objects when channeling them through the ground.
There is one thing about PA and Clone that always confused. When you absorb a power is your attack quota reduced or you need to actually attack to count power quota? And with Clone when you clone yourself does the quota go down? Also the clone has his own quota right?
If you absorb powers leaving the enemy with them, it doesn't go toward your quota. Taking powers from an enemy does, however. And obviously using absorbed powers will subtract from your attack/defense quota. Your clone has it's own quota. And summoning a clone takes off one of your quota (in the post in which you summon the Clone).
Fire/Ice - if you inhale someone else's fire/ice does it just disappear once within you or could you re-breathe it within the next level number of posts?
It disappears. However if you wanna produce fire from your mouth you just use your own fire and take off the suitable attack quota.
I noticed that the power tables aren't as specific after the Premise & merge happened. Why?[b]
You will come to notice that ADA power tables give you a lot less description / details on what powers do, which is intended. Originality and creativity are always welcome.

[b]Grimoire Questions
Can the door spell be used for transportation within a thread?
This spell is for you to escape when you're in danger, a way out of the arena and out of the fight without getting killed, any other way would be abuse.
When trapped the energy case found in the Grimoire, are you still allowed some degree of movement? I realize that you cannot walk around whilst trapped in these, but, can you move your mouth, enough to throw an insult or chant a spell?
Inside a binding sphere or the dark energy force field, the victim can't do any physical/magical moves. But the energy case from the Grimoire does allow you to use spells. No physical movement though.
If my Species allows me to turn into an animal form, can I use the spell to call an astral projection of my animal?
No, you cannot create an astral animal of yourself. You can create an astral of an animal you summoned (either via a spell or talisman).
Fiery Portal Question. Is this a single portal or a twin portal appears where you want?
Twin portals. You step in one and come out of the other.
The Speech Reversal spell. When casting this spell it would mean that the opponent would chant spells backwards too right? If so, would their spells still have effect or not? Because technically they're not chanting the actual spell.
Yes, they would be chanting a spell backwards which would mean that it would have no effect whatsoever.. except for maybe making them look like a loon.
Are you able to cast pain away that is mentally brought to you with help of Empathy? (I mean, if someone inflicts pain with empathy, would the spell in the Grimoire, Release the pain, release the gift, let his/her pain be cast adrift be able to do so?)
No, only physical pain could be reversed with that spell.
A question about the Summoning spell... since it works like conjuration, can we conjure living beings such as a tiger at level 6?
As the explanation of the spell states, you can't ("Can summon 1 solid object, stays as long as your level").
Say someone used a wind blast spell on me to throw me in a particular direction. I'd still be able to move and change my body position during flight right?
You can move if your body movement is not restrained in any way (e.g. frozen).
Wind Blasting spell. Can someone control where where his opponent is TKed?
Slightly. As in give a direction, yet the power is not as refined as TK itself. So they could not control more than the direction.
If I was turned into an animal [eg. the black cat from the spell], and I summoned my clone would she be in cat form or humanoid form?
While being in animal form you do not possess any powers. It takes you until you turn back into your normal form to get your powers back. You wouldn't be able to call for a clone while being a cat.
I have got a question about the Third Eye Spell. If the eye is an actual eye, would you be able to protect is since it is a separate object? Like creating a force field around it to protect it from harm?
Yep, you can treat it as a separate object when it comes to magic.
When affected by the glue to the spot spell, would it be able to just teleport/apparate/blink out?
If glued to the spot you can't teleport out. You'd teleport, but instead of winding up somewhere else you'd just be in the same place.
Concerning Strengthen The Spell Caster Spell. In case my character was sapped of strength via Dark Talisman or similar, can he use the spell to cancel out the weakness?
The answer would be yes unless you're in such a bad shape you can't even cast the spell properly, IMO.
Does this spell clouds all my senses if cast by a level 3, even my Keen hearing and tactile senses? (Where I stand to where I'm placed, let them not know of this space. May their vision waver, their clarity blown, to allow this change to go unknown. )
Basically the spell would "fool" all your senses into believing the caster was someone else. So even with heightened senses it would still be tricked. However, should a person engage in close combat, you'll be able to recognise them.
Since this spell (Take this Water, Float it high, Surround the enemy, And let them slide) requires either an Ice or Water Talisman/power I'm assuming that when the spell is chanted that a water/ice geyser would erupt underneath the person the spell is cast on, right?
It's more like suspending them in a bubble.
With this spell (Take this water, Rain it hard, Sharp as knives, To bleed your guard), do clouds appear above an opponent? I'd assume so since rain needs clouds. How should I visualise the effects? Just like sharp water drops/ice shards?
No clouds. Rain just materializes, sharp as knives.
Create a fissure spell. What exactly is a fissure? It says that you can't control the steam without the proper talisman, would that be Water, Ice or either one?
Water. A fissure is a crack in the ground.
Create a Shockwave Spell. Is this a general effect?
No. This shockwave is directed at one enemy. And the further the shockwave travels in distance, the weaker it gets.
Question about the quicksand spell, if I've used it on someone for one post, then they sink in the quicksand...what happens when the spell wears off? #1 - Are they trapped under the surface or do they return to the top of the surface? #2 - Is there a hole left in the surface because of the quicksand? Because I used it on a witch who is pretty much dead, but I can't post my final acts because I wasn't sure about where her body would be.
I've always pictured the outcome it's sort of like what happens in Jumanji. Once the spell wears off the victim would be stuck on the ground at whatever depth she/he had sunk.
Can we use the "Fill something with the power of Fire" on a weapon? What would be the effect?
Well it would affect the weapon in the same way it would affect anything else. So if the weapon was made out of wood, it probably wouldn't be the most brilliant idea, since it'd result in the weapon being burnt. But if the weapon was made of some metal my guess would be it'd heat it up really bad, and so it'd add to the final effect of your attack.
Can we use the "Fill something with the power of Fire" to fill an opponent's inside up with fire?
Nope, you can't do that.
When a spell like the "shrink an opponent" doesn't mention the time frame (aka how many posts one stays shrunk) do we assume it depends on our level?
Yes. Unless specified it's gonna last as long as it can according to your level.
About the "shrink an opponent" spell where it's stated that according to your level you can shrink an opponent from 1/2 to 1/4 to the size of a mouse, does time affects the how small you make them? And this spell can it be used to shrink only limbs or we must use the entire opponent?
How much you shrink someone determines the quota used up by the spell. Time does not affect it. And you'd shrink the entire person.
You cast a spell on yourself (lets say to be invisible) and in the beginning it is supposed to last 4 posts but around post 2 you get tired of it and you wanna stop its effects. Can you override the spell? Will it use up any of your quota if yes? In a training fight you can of course include an OOC in your post and tell your opponent that you're just dropping the effect. However, you should always be aware of the fact that having a spell last the whole length can be very boring. Just because it can does not mean it has to. A good thing is to keep durations to 1 or 2 posts, that keeps the fight from getting boring for the opponent or yourself, and rather combine spell effects with powers or other moves.
Can you cast a spell while you do not see your enemy? If you only feel them, smell them, hear them (advanced senses and all playing in) can you cast a spell on them?
You can. However the aim of the spell is very likely to be thrown off if you do not see them. It also depends on what type of spell (if it were one that affected the opponent directly I'd say you could not. A spell that sends a general effect out would be feasible.) As to the second part of the question, spotting them with enhanced senses will of course help you aid the problem of being blind but will not fix it 100%. You generally have to be able to see someone to cast a direct spell on them.
Can I say a spell and have it affect two different people? Just wanted to kill two birds with one stone, if you know what I mean....
I think for the most part, yes, if you're talking about having a single spell affect more than one enemy. Just have to pay attention to the wording if it only allows one enemy or more than one. And if it is a spell where a name needs to be used, it will only affect the one person.
the 'Poison An Opponent's Blood' spell, [Nunc infero / Fluo equito harum vena] says "This spell conjures a bit of poison into the blood stream of your opponent, causing dizziness, confusion, and at high levels paralysis." In this situation, does level four count as a high level, or does the paralysis take effect for levels five and six.
Level 4 would be considered a higher level. Lower levels T-3, upper levels 4+.
For the Poison Breath spell, will it only affect 1 opponent or can it affect numerous if spread around? And does it lose its potency with distance?
Affects whoever is hit by it (can be more than one). And yes, of course it loses potency with the distance (see "level ranges").
About the Been There, Done That spell, while we have to perform the same attack and defense as we did in the last post, do we have to attack the same person? And if I could squeeze in a new attack/defense just before the spell takes effect, do I take this new attack/defense or disregard it and just take the attack/defense from my last post?
Have in mind a time loop. You keep doing the same stuff from the moment the spell is completed. Exactly same stuff to same person/attack/defense. And IMO if there is a time space you would use in any other case then you can use it here too although messing with time lines is always weird.
